HRMOS

High-Resolution Multi-Object Spectrograph

Overview

A Very High-Resolution Multi-Object Spectrograph (HRMOS), to be proposed as a new instrument for the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) in the context of the VLT2030 roadmap, crucially aims to fill the gap in capabilities amongst the landscape of future instrumentation planned for the next decade and afterward.

HRMOS would provide a combination of capabilities essential to carry out breakthrough science that would otherwise remain unexplored, such as extrasolar planet studies in crowded environments and alternative constraints on cosmological parameters through accurate age determination of old stellar populations. At the same time, HRMOS will also be unique to complement spectroscopic surveys at lower resolution, allowing detailed investigations of young stars and their magnetic phenomena, stellar physics and nucleosynthesis, star cluster science, Galactic and Local Group archaeology, interstellar medium abundance measurements. The key characteristics of HRMOS will be high spectral resolution (R = 80,000 ), combined with multi-object (40−100) capabilities, blue wavelength coverage, and long-term stability that will provide excellent radial velocity precision and accuracy (∼10 m/s). In summary, HRMOS is an instrument that will push the boundaries of our knowledge, and that is envisioned as a workhorse instrument in the future.
